There's a new Ms. Marvel in town, but do we care?

Story: Meet The New Boss…

Writer: Brian Reed

Artist: Rebekah Isaacs

Colors: Christopher Sotomayor

Last issue, Carol Danvers died.  This issue, Karla Sofen, also known as the villain Moonstone and the “Dark Avengers” Ms. Marvel takes over.  The first issue shows her mincing it up with the public, and also meeting with a psychiatrist who was actually a CIA agent sent to take down Moonstone.  After speaking about her past and how she had killed her mother, Sofen kills the psychiatrist.

Its not a lot happening this issue.  We’re meant to get an insight to Sofen’s mind, but why do we care?  For starters, the cyclical nature and standing laws of comics dictate that Carol Danvers will be back.  She’s certainly endured far worse in her tenure as Ms. Marvel/Binary/Warbird.  Also, the book is trying to make us care about someone who is beyond a doubt evil.  This is someone who has spent the past few years standing shoulder to shoulder with Bullseye and the Green Goblin.  So far as any kind of redemption goes, didn’t we see that angle try to be played out in Thunderbolts?  There’s just nothing to indicate any reason to make a long-term investment in a character who has already done this before in the past few years, and hasn’t yet shown any sign of making a definitive change.

Final Grade: C.  Sorry Marvel, but you’ve got to try harder than this to get me to care.
