“Star Wars Galaxies” Struck Down

Say goodbye to the classic Star Wars universe you knew and loved; Star Wars Galaxies announced it will be shutting down on December 15, 2011. The Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game first debuted in 2003 to good reviews, but over time became more mixed as gameplay changes took effect. As early as 2006, servers were reportedly only populated by just over 10,000 players at any given time.

Sony insists the move isn’t based on ramifications of recent Sony Online Entertainment hacks which shut down the Playstation Network and resulted in the information of thousands of SOE users being compromised. However, with the imminent release of Bioware’s MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, the closure of Galaxies certainly is no surprise.
