Day 5 kicks off and looks to be edgier titles than the rest we’ve seen this week.
First up is Stormwatch #1 from Paul Cornell and Miguel Sepulveda, which is where The Martian Manhunter has been stuck. He looks surprisingly comfortable there, but it’s weird that such a mainstay character has been moved. There’s also a completely rebooted, entirely revamped Blackhawks #1 by Mike Costa and Ken Lashley which re-envisions the team as mercenaries on a “kill them before they kill us” mission. Sgt. Rock almost gets a bit of a makeover as the characters grandson takes over Easy Company, now a team of ex-militar working as covert private contractors in Sgt. Rock and the Men of War #1 by Ivan Brandon and Tom Derenick.
Jonah Hex’s on-going looks like it’s been canceled in the reboot, but he is headlining All-Star Western #1, which sees Hex in Gotham at a key point in it’s history. The book, written by Jonah Hex writers Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti, and illustrated by Moritat, will also include back up features from other DC western stars.
Titans mercifully appears over, but Kyle Higgins brings us Deathstroke #1. Wielding Cloud Strife’s sword (seriously, look at the size of that thing) and stealing an old pair of Batman’s pants, the series has Deathstroke aiming to reclaim his legacy as a deadly assassin, and features art from Joe Bennett and Art Thibert. Meanwhile, Dan DiDio picks up new writing chores with artists Keith Giffen and Scott Koblish for OMAC #1, the story of a man transformed into a killing machine by Brother Eye.
There’s also the official annoucement of Grifter #1 from Nathan Edmondson, with art by CAFU and BIT of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents. The series will follow the popular WildC.A.T.S. mercenary as he hunts down aliens who hide in human form. Between this and Voodoo, how long will it really be before the two lead to a relaunched WildC.A.T.S. series?
This puts us at 46 out of 52 titles announced. Tomorrow, expect the remaining titles to be announced and be tied in with Superman. When you factor in the still unofficial announcements of Superman and Action Comics, we know 48 of the 52 titles. yea, Stormwatch does totally need something like this… a reboot. I’m not convinced by the selection of characters as most of the main story arch was completely to do with Jackson King e.g. Battalion (why was possible one of the strongest telekinetic’s… reduced to using a body? from all standing it just looked to make him meagre.) there were tonnes of really great characters Fuji, a story arch that was not truly finished, Hellfire – again, very fluctuating, he shifted form quite a lot and never really got the spotlight as much as he should. Winter, where did all that power go and why could he use it when he really needed.jenny stark, jackhawks moore, the weatherman… its probably a little to early to tell but a kick off with “the martian manhunter”, “apolo”, “midnighter” seems vastly devoid of any of the main character that brought anything to the story in the first place.smeel very much like a holiwood re-boot and if so, please don’t. we all know the world is a better place with such uncreative money grabbing foolishness.
