The Timeframe Of Lyja Makes My Head Hurt

Secret Invasion Spoilers Here-In!!

At the end of Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four #1, we discover that Sue Storm has indeed been kidnapped and replaced by a Skrull.  We also learn that said Skrull is Lyja, the former wife of the Human Torch/Johnny Storm who previously attempted to infiltrate the FF by posing as The Thing’s girlfriend, Alicia Masters.

Now, from what we can tell in Secret Invasion #1 and 2, the Sue Storm on the ship (who, one can assume, is the real deal) is a circa 1970s-ish Sue Storm.  Lyja made her first appearance in FF #357, back in 1991, when it was revealed that she wasn’t really Alicia Masters (I could be iffy on my timeframe/issue number here, but I do have the issue where they rescued the real Alicia, and I do remember it being somewhere in that general realm.  Point stands, early 90s.)

Has Lyja always been Sue?  Clearly not, she couldn’t be in two places at once, and Alicia was on the Skrull Homeworld after she was kidnapped.  And Lyja was on good terms with the rest of the FF for a while after that, and was last seen blending into humanity to attempt to live a normal life after the battle with Onslaught, when the entire world thought the FF was dead.

So what gives?  Onslaught/Heroes Reborn clearly hasn’t been retconned, since there was a sequel to it last year.  And even if Lyja has been Sue Storm, when did the switch really take place?  Are all the heroes on the ship decoys? Does Marvel not have a good continuity staff?  Is another Skrull impersonating Lyja to throw off Johnny, who is at this moment and time confronting Lyja!?

(Actually, that last one is a pretty good possibility).

More entertaining than this, however, would have to be that the Skrulls are shown to initially trick Sue by appealing to her libido.  Hey, super genius super heroes gotta get some too, ya know.

There’s still a few issues left, and its likely that this will be addressed in some way or another, but I feel it necessary to bring to light that right now, Lyja’s appearance isn’t adding up right in the cards.  Any thoughts from my loyal readers?

A former military brat, Christopher currently studies Journalism at a local college, and aspires to one day finally finishing editing that novel he wrote two years ago. He is currently finishing and seeking an artist for his first comic project, SAVIOUR.
