The Pull List! Week of Feb 25, 2008

Well, look like it’s time for the Pull List again.  This week, we’re seeing “Blue Beetle” come to an end.  Heartbreaking, but the character will live on in “Teen Titans”.  Meanwhile, on the Marvel front of things, it looks like they’re doing a good job of overloading you with Avengers related titles.  Oh well, at least they’re all good!

Here you go, this week’s Pull List…what you need to read in comics for the week of February 25, 2008.

Comics Reviews: "X-Factor" #40, "The Outsiders" #15

xf40

“X-Factor” has proven to be a surprise hit.

As we hit the 40th issue, the series continues to maintain its stride, taking a team of second tier X-Universe characters and putting them on their own team, and adding a splash of noir and mystery. This issue, we catch up with Madrox, having walked to see John Madrox, the one dupe he never absorbed. Madrox is having a bit of an existential crisis after the events of last issue, and now has come to speak with John to essentially give his last rites.

Last issue, Peter David asked that we not spoil the ending, and rightfully so. It was a bit of a shocker. And now, at the end of this issue, we see why he’s asked us to do it again.

(And no, I won’t spoil it here.)

So it goes without saying, this is a difficult review to write. Regardless, the story is fantastic, the art is gorgeous, and if you’ve been following X-Factor since the beginning (or, at the least, since Messiah CompleX), the pay off of this issue is in spades.

“The Outsiders” hits a new stride with #15.

After a quick reboot that included a barely there Martian Manhunter and the ghosts of Ralph and Sue Dibney, “The Outsiders” are again rebooted. This time, the new team is Geo-Force, Black Lightning, Halo, Metamorpho, Katana, The Creeper and Owlman. Needless to say, a few surprises in the line-up, especially in that Owlman is revealed as a Golden Age legacy character. The series starts off with the team being informed of the new status quo: they will literally be “outsiders”, cut off from the world for months on end as they strive to complete missions.

The art comes across as passable, and the writing is decent, but this issue seems to serve only to introduce readers to the new team. It wouldn’t be so bad, except for the fact that we’ve just done this twice in the past 15 issues. Team shake-ups are one thing, but not when we don’t have enough time to actually get to know the team. I’ll probably be sticking this one out to see what happens, but the first issue certainly seems to be lacking a certain quality to it.

Late to The Party: "Doctor Who" (2005) Season 1

Christopher Eccleson and Billie Piper star as The Doctor and Rose Tyler on the new "Doctor Who"...

Back in 1996, there was a telemovie on FOX called “Doctor Who”.  It was pointed out to me by my father, who’s always had a passing interest in 60s Sci-Fi, and I decided I should give this one a go.  The movie featured Paul McGann as the titular Doctor, newly regenerated and suffering from amnesia.  Since then, I’ve always been moderatly aware of the character, but never really got the oppurtunity to look into it more.

Back in 2005, BBC began a new “Doctor Who” series, with Christopher Eccleston (“eXsitenZ”, “28 Days Later…”) as The Doctor, and British pop singer Billie Piper (“Secret Diary Of A Call Girl”) as his latest companion, Rose.  Since I didn’t have cable, I wasn’t able to see this.  So, now here we are in 2009, and a friend from work begans going on about the series after I pointed out I recognized her computers background was the TARDIS from the series.  After her glowing compliments of the series, I decided it was time for me to find my own TARDIS and go check out the series.

Unfortunately, I had to settle for reruns.  Continue reading

The Pull List! — Week of February 18, 2009

So here we are, my first official pull list on the new Homeworld, and I must admit its a bitter one.  Last week saw the end of “Nightwing”, and this week sees the end of two more great DCU titles, “Robin” and “Birds of Prey”.  Its quite the shame; these titles have had their missteps but have always been solid books with consistently good sales and fantastic stories.  Mind you, these characters will be showing up next week in “Battle for the Cowl”, but that’s beyond the point.  That said, let’s dive in headfirst: here’s what you need to be sure to pick up in comics this week!

A Rant on Remaking Horror Films

facepalm

As I’m sure most of you know from this very site, a new/remade Friday the 13th graced our screens this past weekend. While some praised the movie, hailing it as the definite return of Jason, others dennounced it as blasphemy. Thanks to a sold out theater, I didn’t get a chance to see the movie this weekend. Therefore, I will avoid making any comment about the ’09 Friday the 13th besides noting that I think it should have never been made. If they would have simply made this Friday the 13th: Part 11, I would have had no problem with it. But alas, they did not.

Scarred Deadpool Confirmed For X-Men Origins!

The Deadpool Bugle (a great Deadpool fansite) has posted scans of a Chinese “Super Hero Squad” figure which confirms that the scarred Deadpool we all know and love will appear in the upcoming “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”.

Well, sort of.  The figure and screenshots in the trailer do confirm a scarred Deadpool’s appearance, but it also confirms that he appears to have large, Baraka-like blades on each hand.  Why they could do this and not give him a pair of handy swords (which he does brandish in the trailer) is beyond me.
