First Impressions: Bionic Commando (2009)

Bionic Commando Box ArtThe “Bionic Commando” remake was unleashed upon us today in the form of a multiplayer demo on XBox live.  So, how does it add up?

The first thing you should know is that you aren’t playing as the titular commando at all.  Instead, you’re a randomly colored Mega Man/Tron hybrid by way of Bomberman Act Zero with a bionic arm and a pistol, as well as two punches and, believe it or not, a jump button.

When the game kicks up, the first thing you’ll notice is that you’re playing with people who have already mastered the mechanics of the game.  If you think that’s unfair, well tough shit, welcome to the world of online gaming.  The second thing you’ll notice is that while moving around and shooting is your standard fare, swinging around with your bionic arm is noticeably less standard.  One would think it would be comparable to swinging around in, oh I don’t know, a Spider-Man title, but its like trying to climb a rope with a dozen weights tied around you.  Its a fairly fickle system, and takes some getting used to, and even then you find yourself overshooting your goal one second and dangling off the edge of a building like a hopeless shooting gallery duck the next.

There’s a host of power ups available on the level, such as armor, health, and additional weapons such as a sniper rifle, assault rifle, and a grenade launcher.  And they do help, but really the most effective strategy here is to pop the opponent with your standard pistol and then run up and punch them in the face, since this seems to take care of most anyone.

The matches only last for 5 minutes, so you don’t have a lot of time to really get a good feel in one match, but there’s also the issue of getting to the match.  I’ve never had a terrible time finding matches on XBox Live (I’ve taken Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead online, and both loaded up and found matches fairly fast), but Bionic Commando seems to just chug and grind away while trying to find a match.  If no one’s found, you’re greeted with “Waiting for 3 Other Players”, and then suddenly there’s 7 people in your game.  You have no options to choose during the demo, which is to be expected.

In short, CAPCOM delivers a decent multiplayer experience.  The swinging gets easier as you play, but there’s just not a lot to tell from this.  The demo is strictly multiplayer, so there’s no implication as to how the story will run or how gameplay in the single player campaign will work.  The demo is available now and I highly recommend checking it out before you buy this game.

The Pull List! Week of April 29, 2009

So here we are again. A new week, a new Pull List. Derk just finished up college for the semester, and my temp assignment just ended, so expect me to get the site back to its full running potential during this lapse. In the meantime, why not pick up some ad space to show off your website and help support ours? I’m also looking into launching a store so you can purchase official HomeWorld merchandise.

In the meantime, here’s this week’s Pull List! Legion of Three Worlds makes its return, as it edges closer to its grand finale, while an old friend from the X-Men’s past makes their shocking return. As always, this is just the list of purchases I recommend, but just because its not on the list doesn’t mean it isn’t good! If you enjoy this article, leave a comment to let us know, or hit the button the left and leave us a DIGG.

The Pull List! Week of April 15, 2009

Well, by the time you’re reading this, your taxes are either due or late. Either way, chances are you’ve got a nice chunk of change waiting on you, so here’s an idea: buy some comics and support the industry! And hey, if you enjoy the Pull List, leave us a comment and let us know? Or perhaps even hit the Digg button to the right and support the site? Much appreciated.

Derk's Pull List for the Week of 4/15/2009

I must say, this week seems like a really slow week of comics. Nothing on the list that I’m really in a hurry to read, but I’ll pick it up nonetheless. I still don’t know why I’m picking up Moon Knight and Green Lantern Corps on a routine basis. Maybe I’m just stupid, but I really have no clue as to what’s actually going on in Moon Knight. As for Green Lantern Corps, I don’t think I’ve ever read an issue that didn’t bore me to tears. Anyway, enough ranting, onto my picks for this week.

Review: "Doctor Who: Planet Of The Dead"

Doctor Who: The Planet Of The DeadDOCTOR WHO: THE PLANET OF THE DEAD

Starring: David Tennant, Michelle Ryan, Nome Dumezweni, Lee Evans

Written By: Russell T. Davies and Gareth Roberts

Directed By: James Strong

The Doctor returns after a several month hiatus!  “Doctor Who” took a break this year, and instead we’re being treated to four specials throughout the course of 2009.  The first of which, “Planet of the Dead”, aired last night. This time, The Doctor finds himself imprisoned on a (seemingly) desert planet with several civilians, including the thief Lady Christina de Souza (Michelle Ryan, The Bionic Woman).  Seperated from his TARDIS, The Doctor’s only assistance is in the form of UNIT agents Capt. Erisa Magambo (Nome Dumezwani, Doctor Who 4×11: Turn Left) and resident scientific genius Prof. Malcom Taylor (Lee Evans, The Fifth Element).

This is going to be one of the briefer reviews to date on this site, simply because there isn’t a lot to say.  Michelle Ryan does shine, and its a shame she’s not around as a companion (though who knows what the future will hold), but all in all this is a rather typical episode.  That’s not to say it isn’t a good episode, there’s just nothing much about this episode that stands out.  If anything, it seems this episode serves to set up a foreshadowing moment at the end where The Doctor is advised of his impending death; not really much of a surprise for fans considering the publicity surrounding the slated casting changes in the near-to-immediate future.  Regardless, this is a good episode, and more than enough to tide over the Who-philes until the next special, “The Waters of Mars”, which is slated to air sometime during the upcoming holiday season.

Final Grade: C.  Not a great episode, but not a bad episode either.  I think we’re all just glad to see The Doctor back on TV again!

Review: Dragonball Evolution

Warning!  The following review may contain SPOILERS!!

Dragonball Evolution movie posterDRAGONBALL EVOLUTION

Starring: Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun-Fat, Emmy Rossum, Jamie Chung, James Marsters, Joon Park

Director: James Wong

Writers: Ben Ramsey (screenplay), Akira Toriyama (novel)

Long time fans likely remember that this site was, once upon a time, “The Anime Homeworld”, and it contained a rather large fan site dedicated to Dragon Ball Z; this, of course, was at the height of that series’ popularity. Now, several, several years after it became a cultural phenomenon, the Dragon Ball franchise has finally reached American silver screens with “Dragonball Evolution”. Unfortunately for fans and non-fans alike, everything endearing and charming about the franchise has been stripped, leaving a hollow, empty attempt at cashing in on a beloved story.

Review: "Wolverine: Weapon X" #1

Wolverine: Weapon X #1Wolverine: Weapon X #1

Writer: Jason Aaron

Artist: Ron Garney

Colors: Jason Keith

Covers: Ron Garney, Adam Kubert, Justin Ponsor, Olivier Coipel, Alan Davis, Mark Farmer, Rob Schwager (Phew!  Can it please be less variant cover time now?)

He’s the best there is at what he does!  And he does is…pretty much the same thing he usually does.

With his evil son Daken taking over the main Wolverine title, Marvel opted to give Wolverine another title, because he doesn’t have any exposure.  Honestly, when was the last time you saw this guy anywhere?  Not like he has two other solo books, an animated series and an upcoming solo flick, right?

The premiere arc of “Wolverine: Weapon X” has Wolverine meeting up with former Weapon X member and current retiree Maverick, and discovering that someone has acquired the plans from the Weapon X project and is making a bunch of Weapon X’s.  So, Wolverine decides that he needs to investigate the situation, find out who is behind it, and sway them to use their powers for good.

Nah, just kidding.  He’s going to kill them.

Its pretty routine Wolverine action, but there is a considerable increase in the amount of violence.  Wolverine cuts off a man’s arm before we even see his face, and has rammed a gun up another guy’s ass before the bottom of the next page.  This is clearly not the kid friendly Wolverine of the cartoons, and he’s even sporting his black on gray X-Force uniform (sans mask in this title), which is a good sign.  The blue and yellow costume is fine when he’s with the X-Men, but not good for the sneaking around murder machine that Wolverine really is deep down inside.

All in all, this first issue isn’t terrible, but its pretty obviously still a Wolverine series.  The character remains true to itself, and the writer’s have a pretty good handle on the character’s history.  Despite all this, I believe there could be potential for something really great here, as long as they aren’t afraid to actually explore and experiment.  Wolverine has been Wolverine for as long as we can remember; isn’t it time someone reinvented the wheel and brought a new level to this character?

Final Grade: B A typical first issue . Nothing really happens, but nothing can really be expected to happen.  I’ll give it a little longer before deciding whether or not to drop it.
