The Musicians You Should Know article returns! This will become a weekly article designed to spread the word on bands I believe should get a bit more exposure. I am always interested in new music, and like I said, if I like your band you will get your own article/advertisement. Now, on with today’s induction, Flipper.

Flipper is an immensely influential punk band out of San Francisco who initially formed in 1979. You may have not heard or heard of Flipper, but you’ve probably heard bands they’ve influenced. One band that would serve as a prime example would be Nirvana.

This isn’t really music you can tap your feet to, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with this. As I said, the harsh feedback and mumbled lyrics within Nrivana’s albums seem to nod at the earlier Flipper releases. Even though the music may seem a bit abrasive, with enough listens, it won’t be long until the repetitive riffs draw you in like moth to flame.

Flipper’s sound is just heavy. As Henry Rollins stated in Get In The Van, “They were just heavy. Heavier than anything”.  That just sums it up. Flipper, to me, is a band you have to listen to a bit to truly appreciate. This isn’t a band you’ll play and immediately decide they’re great. I suggest that, if you haven’t heard them, find a copy of Generic as soon as you can and enjoy the madness.
