The forever Teenage Turtles return yet again in a revamped version of the 1992 SNES classic Turtles in Time. Sadly, this game serves as a reminder that sometimes simple is not better.
I think it’s safe to say I am a fairly big classic TMNT fan. So when I heard about Turtles in Time Re-Shelled, I was ecstatic. I had a lot of fun as a kid playing the SNES version of Turtles in Time, so I was eagerly anticipating riding that nostalgic train all the way to gaming bliss. I was sadly brought back to Earth when I realized that this game doesn’t exactly recreate the immense fun of the previous version.
To simply lay this out, Turtles in Time Re-Shelled is not much without it’s nostalgic charm. If you take the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles away from this game, you have a fairly boring and tedious hack and slash. For the entirety of the game, you’ll mostly find yourself aimlessly pressing away at one of two attack buttons. That’s pretty much all that is expected of you throughout the game. Sure this is a nice reminder of former days for a moment or two, but as the game goes on, it gets extremely monotonous.
The polished graphics are nice, I suppose. The lighting is very nice in the game, though I think it would have been cool to have an option of playing the game in the original form. There are some really neat effects throughout, like being able to launch a foot soldier at your TV screen.
Basically, it all boils down to whether or not you’re a fan of the Turtles. I realize it seems a bit too simplistic to base the review on that fact, but it’s honestly true. For a fan, it has everything you would want. The Turtles make their cheesy comments we’ve come to love over the years and they have their trademark colors and weapons, though they all control/fight the same. If you loved the Turtles as a kid, you’ll enjoy the nostalgic trip. Just be aware that it’s going to get old fast. This game will probably hold your attention for 30 minutes to an hour, after that you’ll have enough.
