Me, The Otaku: Deadman Wonderland

Oh boy. Guess what this is all about. Go on, guess.

..
.
..

Didn’t get it? Aww.

Put simply, Deadman Wonderland is a series about an amusement park/high security private prison wherein the inmates compete in games (usually deadly ones) for people’s amusement. People think it’s all very clever CGI, but the inmates are actually dying.

Two of the main characters, Shiro and Ganta

The anime was aired between April 17th 2011 and July 3rd, while the manga has been serialised in Shounen Ace since 2007. The English manga has been around since 2010, published by Tokyopop, but I’ve found it rather difficult to get my hands on the first issue (I think it’s on hiatus at the moment as well).

While prisoners of all kind seem to ‘play’ these games, the main group are the Death Row inmates, of which all the main characters (who are prisoners) are. They wear collars which inject them with a poison that, if the antidote is not taken, will kill them in three days. The antidote takes the form of a piece of red and white striped sweet, simply referred to as candy. How do they get the candy? By playing the games! If they lose in the games they die. If they win, they get points, which they can use to get more candy so they can then play more games.

In amongst the Death Row inmates are another group called the ‘Deadmen’. They don’t show up on any roster anywhere, and the area they are kept in doesn’t officially exist. Even the head of security has no idea about it. These inmates are special. They all contain a thing called a ‘Branches of Sin’, which gives them a blood-based ability. Yeah, blood-based. There is a lot of blood in this series, anime and manga, a lot of it from the fact the Deadmen have to make themselves bleed in order to utilise their ability (Ganta, for example, bites his thumb).

Blood

While I’ve watched the anime (it’s up on Crunchyroll), I’ve not yet read the manga which means I’m not overly sure about a lot of things. The anime leaves a few things unanswered. That’s not to say it’s not thoroughly enjoyable, though. I found it absolutely amazing. But yeah, blood. Lots and lots of blood. And maiming.

ULTIMATE MARVEL VS CAPCOM 3 Says You Still Have Money Capcom Wants

I bought Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds a few days after it released last year, but I really should have listened to Galaxy Next Door’s Michael Torr, because dammit, now we’re getting Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. And I want to be upset that I fell for this ploy, but…well…I mean, LOOK AT THESE ADDITIONS.

The roster adds 12 more characters, rounding it out to an overall 50. Though only Hawkeye, Ghost Rider, Firebrand (Of Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins) and Strider Hiryu are confirmed in the video, we’re already hearing whispers of additions including Phoenix Wright, Vergil, Nova and (surprisingly) Rocket Racoon.

It sucks that Capcom is, as uaual, re-releasing an enahnced version of the game instead of doing DLC (like they’ve already done a few times for MvC 3), but at least the Ultimate edition will only set you back about $40. We’ll have some more info as it’s made available, but for now enjoy the new box art and a plethora of screen shots.

The HomeWorld Is On Limited Updates

Hey all,

You might have noticed I’ve been quiet. I’ve made numerous tweets about it, but you’re not all following The HomeWorld on Twitter for some reason, so here’s your official notice. I’m moving. Not like “Oh hey, this place down the road is nicer.” like I did a year ago, but “Oh hey, this town is a sewer, this place 90 minutes away looks nice”. It’s a lot of stress, a lot of time, and most importantly, a lot of my shit in a box somewhere that I can’t quite place the location of at any given time. My computer isn’t even hooked up; I’ve got my laptop, and I can do most anything the sites would require on it, but it’s not quite as easy.

So, The HomeWorld is on limited updates. I’m not saying there won’t be posts; just don’t count on very many. On the flip side, if you wanted to be a guest writer, now is a prime oppurtunity.

There are two other sites in the network, of course: The RAW Reactor, our Monday night WWE podcast, is on hiatus. Cesar is moving too, at the exact same time I am. Also, there’s some debate of changing up the format; namely, dropping the “Live during RAW” aspect of it and doing it at a more convenient date and time, with the occasional, live episode still cropping up. We’re in the debate process on that one; leave a comment if you have any thoughts on the matter. We’re hoping to have the podcast back up and running in a month or so.

ASTOUNDINGLY, Gavin is ALSO moving (I swear to God, I am not making this up), so the web comic Danny & Scooter is also on hiatus. We’re not aiming for a terribly long hiatus, but we’re also not aiming to resume it until we can do it right.

So we’re not dead. We’re just super busy. Expect more posts from our affiliates Geek Life and Galaxy Next Door over the next few weeks. Thanks for sticking with us, and we’ll see you guys again as soon as possible.

On The Cover: Green Arrow #2

It really shouldn’t surprise me at this point when I see a shitty Green Arrow cover, yet here we are again.

It’s not Ollie; we already saw Ollie on the other cover. It’s not Roy; Roy has red hair, and he’s with Red Hood & the Outlaws. Which leaves only one possible solution.

Oh, Connor Hawke. What have they done to you this time?

Green Arrow #2

Cover to Green Arrow #2

For those unfamiliar with the character, Connor Hawke is the son of Oliver Queen and Moonday “Sandra” Hawke, and took on the mantle of Green Arrow after Ollie’s death in Green Arrow (Vol. 2) #101, where he earned a large fan devotion and often teamed up with Wally West/Flash III and Kyle Rayner/Green Lantern II. Connor would continue as Green Arrow II even after Ollie’s death, though shortly after Ollie’s marriage he was shot by an assassin and nearly died. When he was finally saved, he began to demonstrate advanced healing powers and fighting prowess, but his memories were fragmented and his archery abilities did not return. He was last seen in Blackest Night, acting notably out of character, and has not resurfaced since.

It should be noted that Ollie’s other protege, Mia Dearden, hasn’t been seen post-reboot, and in fact hasn’t appeared in continuity since the Fall of Green Arrow/Rise of Arsenal event.  Dearden, the second Speedy, has a large fan following and is notable as one of comics few HIV-positive characters.

Entertainment Weekly’s New AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Photos

We’ve been pretty vocal on this Amazing Spider-Man costume, but with release not quite as far away as you think and a trailer coming in just a matter of days, Entertainment Weekly has published a number of photos from the upcoming film.

I’m still not really excited for this film yet. I’m fine with Garfield; he’s got the right build for the character, and he looks like he carries himself pretty well in the suit, but it just seems so…over-designed. The suit’s changes are nonsensical, with it’s inane MMA wrap around gloves, melting paint look and giant metal disc web-shooters, and everything else seems to carry a feel and aura of Batman and Robin with it.

There’s also this bizarre costuming notion that Peter Parker should look like a “punk”, and the shots of him with the skateboard are kind of off-putting. It just doesn’t feel like Spider-Man yet.

Plus, you’ll notice by the bits of costume in one picture that Gwen will evidently discover that Peter is Spider-Man by film’s end. Gwen’s presence also contradicts statements that the film wasn’t necessarily a reboot, although entirely invalidating Spider-Man 3 may not be such a bad idea.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a huge Spider-Man fan, so I’ll probably still be seeing this one opening weekend, but if the pictures are any indication, Amazing Spider-Man is going to be less than amazing.

Me the Otaku: Kore wa Zombie desu ka?

[BEFORE anyone gets at me for using a question mark after 'ka', I know, but that's how it's styled. It means 'Is this a zombie?']

This is a romance series. I’ll get that out of the way now. It’s also fantasy and magical girl (well… If you watch it you’ll find out), and could probably also be stretched to harem and comedy, so if you don’t like any of these, this won’t be for you. It can also be a little ecchi, especially the twelfth episode which is fanservice through and through.

This amazing anime series, based on the light novel series of the same name, aired between January and March this year, and was made by Studio DEEN (they made Higurashi, amongst other things). If you were lucky enough to catch the simulcast over on Crunchyroll, good for you . If you haven’t, depending on where you are, they might still have the episodes up.

Besides the main male character, the great majority of characters that crop up are female.

The main cast

Front L-R: Ayumu, Eu. Back L-R: Haruna, Sera

Ayumu Aikawa is the main male character and one of only two important male characters. He is a zombie. Killed before the start of the series, he was resurrected by one of the main female characters, Eucliwood Hellscythe. He’s a bit of a pervert, as shown in episode 12 where his dirty thoughts manifest themselves in every single female character, as well as a few male characters, winding up in rather revealing bikinis (I told you it was a fanservice episode). Being a zombie, he is effectively immortal, though weak to fire. He also tends to dry out in the sun.

Eucliwood HellScythe, or Eu, is a necromancer. A very powerful necromancer, in fact. She is touted as being the most powerful necromancer in existence. Indeed, her magic is so strong she has to keep her emotions under control. She cannot speak out of fear of causing damage (she can kill someone simply by saying ‘Die’), and wears armour at all times. It’s hinted that she has feelings for Ayumu, but it’s never explored in the anime.

Haruna is a masou-shoujo (meaning ‘magically ornamented girl’, it’s a pun on mahou-shoujo, or ‘magical girl’) who accidentally transfers a large of her power into Ayumu the first time they meet, forcing him to become a masou-shoujo as well (cue hilarity). She is well known for her dropkick attack that starts off properly but winds up with a chainsaw to the head. Oh yeah, she wields a chainsaw. Again, it’s hinted that she has feelings for Ayumu.

Seraphim, or ‘Sera’ for short, is a… ‘well endowed’ vampire ninja. Being a vampire, she can sprout a pair of bat wings in order to fly. Being a ninja, she is very quick and very good with a sword. Initially, she hates Ayumu, calling him a ‘piece of s***’, but as is usual with harem series, she ends up with feelings for Ayumu. Since she is a vampire, she does require blood, but not a huge amount.

Last but not least is Sarasvati. Sera’s superior, she is also a vampire ninja. She falls in love with Ayumu as soon as she sees his backside, and proclaims herself his wife, much to Ayumu’s chagrin. She is a major character in the light novels and the manga. In the anime, while not being as important as the above, she is still a major character.

Ayumu in his masou-shoujo transformation

I absolutely loved this series (I’m currently watching it through for the second time). In addition to the brilliant voice cast, the music is incredible. There is one particular piece, that you can listen to here, that I adore. It plays during the sweet/cute/love moments, such as when Eu runs away and Ayumu finds her where they first met. It has, and still does, bring several tears to my eyes.

GREEN LANTERN #1 Cover Finally Released, Is A Huge Spoiler

You may or may not remember that we didn’t get an “official” Green Lantern #1 cover during DC’s week of reboot annoucements; instead we got a placeholder featuring bloody gloves and green rings. DC finally released the cover art to the upcoming relaunch issue, and…well, it’s kind of a huge spoiler.

The red-hot GREEN LANTERN team of writer Geoff Johns and artist Doug Mahnke introduce an unexpected new Lantern.

So what gives? Will the series actually be a full on reboot taking place when Sinestro isn’t evil and Hal is a rookie? Highly unlikely, since the books early solicits implied it would deal with War of the Green Lanterns fallout. More likely that Sinestro is somehow reinstated as a Green Lantern as a result of War, but where does this leave the Sinestro Corps and it’s many members?

Only time will tell, I suppose. We’ll have more as it’s available.

Check Out The BATMAN: YEAR ONE Trailer!

If you’re a fan of Batman and any of his recent incarnations, you can pretty much thank Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s phenomenal storyline “Year One” for that. Running through issues #404 through #407 of Batman in 1987, the oft-collected series helped to re-establish the character’s grim and gritty origins, alongside Miller’s previous work The Dark Knight Returns, and served loosely as an inspiration for the well-reviewed but never produced Batman reboot that was slated to be helmed by Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky.

Now, for the first time ever, the story is receiving an animated adaptation, and features Benjamin McKenzie as Bruce Wayne/The Batman, Bryan Cranston as James Gordon, Eliza Dushku as Selina Kyle and Katee Sackhoff as Sarah Essen.

The film is slated for a DVD release on October 18th, and will include a Catwoman short as the latest installment in the “DC Showcase” series of animated short features.

In addition to Batman: Year One, DC Universe Animated Originals also currently has Justice League: Doom (an adaptation of the Tower of Babel story line from JLA) and The Dark Knight Returns in production, rounding out a decidedly Batman heavy future of animated features.
