Through thick and thin, terrible scripts and multiple director changes, the X-Men film franchise has always had one bit of consistency, and that’s the stellar acting of Hugh Jackman. His turn as insanely popular character Wolverine has served as the central focus of 4 X-Men films now, and his cameo in the X-Men: First Class was easily one of the film’s most talked about moments.
Despite the misstep that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine (a stinker which damn near killed the entire franchise), I’m glad Jackman’s back. He’s damn good in the role, and as he’s aged he’s become even better for it. I’m bummed they’re ham handedly shoving the original X-Men trilogy’s continuity into that of the way better than expected First Class with the upcoming Days of Future Past adaptation, but at least we get to see Jackman continue on with the role that made him a star.
That being said, here’s the domestic and international trailers for The Wolverine, the gritty solo film from James Mangold (3:10 To Yuma) and Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol). Eschewing the previous more comic book-like attempts, The Wolverine takes Jackman out of his costume and pits him against ninja and samurai. The trailer looks pretty solid, and I’m remiss to admit it actually looks like a really great film. Slated for a July 24 release, I’ll definitely be checking this one out.
