An unprompted review of Mattel’s figure of Jack Black’s Steve from A Minecraft Movie

The action figures yearn for the shelves.

I was wandering around the store picking up some groceries last night, and I came upon the display of figures from the upcoming “A Minecraft Movie,” a film I don’t really care about, and there he stood. Jack Black, in all his 3 3/4″ scale glory.

Feeling slightly more creative than usual and annoyed because the super glue I bought wasn’t working with the photobooth I had printed off, I set up the camera and recorded this quick and dirty unboxing/first impressions review.

I haven’t really been keeping up with “A Minecraft Movie.” I’ve played the game off-and-on casually for years, but usually, it just winds up that I build a big pit to base level to make a giant pool while someone else builds a giant ladder to build level so we can build a diving board.

(Though there was this one time that Mike built a sort of cannon thing to shoot you up to build level so you could fall into the pool, then we built some platforms over the pool while he was in the air and…well, tldr, rip Mike’s Minecraft horse, Angus II.)

I’m sure people are probably stoked for “A Minecraft Movie,” but all the talk about the toy line has been about the Jack Black likeness. There’s also a larger figure that would scale with the ongoing 10″ minimalist line that DC and Marvel have, but I didn’t see that one.

In short, it’s fine. The Jack Black likeness is pretty good, and the details and paint apps are pretty clean. The articulation is lacking, though. For a $10 figure, it’s pretty atrocious compared to other offerings in the same price range — as you’ll see in the video.

It’s a good figure if you’re looking for a live-action Steve or a Jack Black, but at this price point, it’s a hard recommendation. It won’t scale with much else, either.
